Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has raised concerns over a significant decline in Grade 1 enrollments in schools across the country.
Presenting statistics in Parliament, he highlighted that while 421,000 students were enrolled in Grade 1 in 2015, the number has now dropped to 279,000.
Calling this a serious issue, the MP urged the government to take immediate action, particularly as reports indicate a growing shortage of teachers in schools. He also questioned the ruling party on what steps will be taken to address these challenges.
