December 17, 2025

The Department of Meteorology has said that the prevailing showery conditions over the Northern and Eastern parts of the island are expected to continue over the next few days.

Accordingly, showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces today (17).

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some places in the Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts, the Meteorology Department said.

Showers or thundershowers may also develop at several locations in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm expected in some of these areas.

Meanwhile, strong winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala districts.
