Six Tamil-Speaking Parties Call for Early Provincial Council Elections

July 14, 2026

Six Tamil-speaking political parties have agreed to work together on a common platform to address key national issues while urging the government to hold the long-delayed Provincial Council elections without further delay.

The agreement was announced at a joint media briefing held in Colombo today (13), attended by representatives of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, Ceylon Workers’ Congress, Democratic Tamil National Alliance, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Tamil Progressive Alliance.

Former Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said that although the government had pledged to hold the Provincial Council elections within a year of assuming office, no meaningful progress has been made so far.

He said the parties would jointly call on the government to ensure regional representation in governance by conducting the elections without further delay.

Sumanthiran also stated that the parties had reached consensus on four key areas: drafting a new Constitution, holding Provincial Council elections, resolving land-related issues affecting all communities, and addressing minority concerns through dialogue and negotiations.

He added that the parties would continue discussions through this common platform with the aim of promoting reconciliation, democratic governance and the protection of the rights of all communities in Sri Lanka.
