Lasantha Wickramasekara of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha.
In recent weeks, a closely contested battle for control of the Weligama local council unfolded between the National People’s Power (NPP) and the SJB, with the latter ultimately securing majority support.
Tensions escalated as NPP supporters stormed the council chamber, demanding the session be deferred until the missing councillors returned safely. The police have since launched a preliminary investigation into the alleged abduction.
Despite their recovery, subsequent political tension has persisted. On July 16, a suspected politically motivated shooting targeted the home of NPP councillor Tharaka Nanayakkara, though no injuries were reported.
