The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has announced its intention to seek the support of other opposition parties to elect the next Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), citing a collective opposition majority within the council.
Although the National People’s Power (NPP) secured the highest number of votes and council seats, it fell short of an outright majority. The NPP won 48 seats after polling over 81,000 votes (36.92%) in the 2025 Local Government Election.
SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara stated that the party would work with other opposition groups to form a majority alliance to elect an SJB-backed Mayor.
The SJB garnered 58,375 votes, winning 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) received 26,297 votes and secured 13 seats. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) obtained 5 and 4 seats, respectively.
Despite the NPP’s electoral lead, the combined strength of the other opposition parties gives them a numerical advantage in the 119-member CMC—the country’s oldest and largest municipal body and the governing authority of Sri Lanka’s capital and financial hub.
