SLTB Introduces New Safety Measures for Long-Distance Bus Services Following Fatal Accident

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has announced a series of enhanced safety measures for long-distance bus operations in the wake of the tragic bus accident in Gerandi Ella that claimed 23 lives.

SLTB Chairman Jeevaka Prasanna stated that for any journey exceeding six hours, two buses from two separate depots will be deployed. This initiative aims to reduce driver fatigue and improve operational oversight, thereby enhancing passenger safety.

The announcement was made during a discussion held yesterday evening, where Prasanna emphasized the importance of immediate and long-term safety reforms within the SLTB.

Meanwhile, the SLTB’s internal investigation into the fatal accident is nearing its conclusion. The incident occurred last Sunday in Gerandi Ella, Kotmale, when an SLTB bus plunged into a ravine, resulting in a significant loss of life.

A five-member inquiry committee, chaired by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and legal expert Ajith Rohana, has been appointed to investigate the tragedy. DIG Rohana noted that the final report will be submitted once several key documents are received, including the motor vehicle examiner’s report and the post-mortem report of the deceased driver, along with other scientific analyses.

These developments are part of a broader initiative to strengthen SLTB’s safety protocols and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
