South Korea’s Ex-Defence Minister Attempts Suicide Amid Martial Law Controversy

Former South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who recently took responsibility for President Yoon Suk-yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law, has reportedly attempted suicide, an official disclosed.

The justice ministry’s correctional agency chief, Shin Yong-hae, informed lawmakers that authorities discovered Kim making the attempt in his detention center on Tuesday night.

Kim had resigned last week alongside other senior presidential aides following public backlash over Yoon’s controversial martial law order. He was detained on Sunday as part of an ongoing investigation into the matter.

The political fallout from the martial law debacle continues to reverberate, leaving the government under intense scrutiny.
