South-West Monsoon Gradually Establishing Over Sri Lanka, Says Met Department

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the South-West monsoon is gradually becoming established over Sri Lanka.

According to the Department, showers or thundershowers are expected at times today (19) in:

  • Western Province
  • Sabaragamuwa Province
  • Central Province
  • North-Western Province
  • Galle District
  • Matara District

Several spells of showers are also forecast for:

  • Northern Province
  • Anuradhapura District
  • Hambantota District

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in:

  • Uva Province
  • Eastern Province
  • Polonnaruwa District

after 2:00 p.m.

The Department further noted that fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over:

  • The western slopes of the central hills
  • Northern Province
  • North-Central Province
  • North-Western Province
  • Hambantota District

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
