Southwest Monsoon Intensifies: Heavy Showers and Strong Winds Expected

The Department of Meteorology has announced that the prevailing active southwest monsoon is expected to intensify, bringing enhanced showery conditions to the southwestern region of the island starting today (June 10). Strong wind gusts are also likely over much of the island and surrounding sea areas.

The general public is advised to stay alert for updated forecasts and warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

Weather Forecast Highlights:

  • Frequent showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts.

  • Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is likely in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts.

  • Isolated showers may occur in the Northern Province, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts.

  • Afternoon or nighttime showers or thundershowers are possible in Badulla, Ampara, and Batticaloa districts.

Wind Advisory:

  • Strong winds reaching up to 50 kmph are expected intermittently over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district.

Safety Notice: Residents are urged to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
