The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the Southwest Monsoon is gradually establishing across Sri Lanka, with increased rainfall expected in the southwestern parts of the island over the next few days.
According to the Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in:
- Western Province
- Sabaragamuwa Province
- North-Western Province
as well as in:
- Galle District
- Matara District
- Kandy District
- Nuwara Eliya District
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some places in these areas.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few locations in:
- Uva Province
- Eastern Province
after 1:00 p.m.
The Department further stated that fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over:
- Western slopes of the central hills
- Northern Province
- North-Central Province
- North-Western Province
- Southern Province
- Trincomalee District
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by:
- Temporary localized strong winds
- Lightning during thundershowers
- Falling trees and flooding in vulnerable areas
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as monsoon activity strengthens across the island.
