Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has underscored Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with China during the ongoing 8th China-South Asia Expo in Kunming.
In an interview with CGTN, Abeywardena emphasized the potential for expanded cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), particularly in flagship projects such as the Colombo Port City and the Hambantota Port.
“The port city is entirely a Chinese investment, and Sri Lanka has recognized it. In parliament, we have passed legislation to provide security to the investors. It’s a special law that is investor-beneficial, investor-friendly, and ensures their investments remain untouched,” he said.
The Speaker also highlighted the historical trade ties between Sri Lanka and China, emphasizing the country’s strategic location and its role as a gateway to the Indian Ocean region.
