A special police investigation has been initiated to determine whether there has been any misuse of the Presidential Fund. Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out the inquiry, according to Mawbima newspaper.
The investigation follows a complaint lodged with Police Headquarters, requesting an inquiry into individuals accused of misappropriating funds from the Presidential Fund.
It was revealed during a recent parliamentary session that 34 former Members of Parliament received millions of rupees from the fund between 2005 and 2024, using the money for purposes outside the fund’s intended objectives. The estimated misuse has exceeded Rs. 12.25 billion.
Authorities are now working to uncover the full extent of the alleged misuse and hold those responsible accountable.
