Spike in Respiratory Illnesses Amid Rainy Weather, Health Authorities Warn

Health authorities in Sri Lanka have reported a notable increase in respiratory illnesses linked to the ongoing rainy weather conditions, with multiple viral strains currently circulating in the community.

Dr. Athula Liyanapathirana, Consultant Community Physician at the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiology Unit, urged the public—particularly young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions—to exercise heightened vigilance during this period.

He emphasized the importance of early medical intervention for symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, warning that timely care can prevent complications and reduce the risk of severe illness.

The Ministry of Health has also advised the public to follow good hygiene practices and avoid crowded places when possible to minimize the spread of infections.
