The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has issued a public warning about the dangers kite flying poses to aircraft operations, particularly during the current kite flying season, which has become increasingly popular among children and adults.
The SLAF emphasized that kite flying in the vicinity of airport runways creates serious safety risks, noting that such activities are recognized worldwide as a contributing factor to air accidents.
In its statement, the SLAF identified several areas where kite flying is especially hazardous due to the proximity of active runways, including Katunayake, Ratmalana, Hingurakgoda, China Bay, Palaly, Katukurunda, Koggala, Vavuniya, Weerawila, and Mattala.
Authorities urged the public to avoid kite flying near these locations in order to safeguard both passengers and aircraft operations.
