Sri Lanka and Australia Collaborate to Boost Specialty Coffee Sector

The Sri Lankan Department of Export Agriculture and the Australian Market Development Facility (MDF) have announced a collaborative agreement to develop a roadmap aimed at advancing Sri Lanka’s emerging specialty coffee industry.

The roadmap will assess the current market landscape, identify gaps, and highlight key strategic actions necessary for sector growth, according to a statement from MDF.

“The Sri Lankan Department of Export Agriculture will partner with MDF to enhance coffee processing quality, deliver sector-specific training, and share training modules developed by MDF with farmers and processors,” the statement said.

MDF highlighted that Sri Lanka’s coffee industry is experiencing a revival, with increased production and growing demand.

Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Lalita Kapoor, remarked, “Australia has been a committed supporter of Sri Lanka’s coffee journey through the Market Development Facility since 2017. It has been a long but rewarding journey, and we are delighted to see the sector gaining more recognition each year.”

Recently, the Department of Export Agriculture, MDF, and the Lanka Coffee Association (LCA) jointly hosted the fourth annual Sri Lanka Coffee Festival in Kandy, celebrating the country’s coffee heritage and future potential.
