Sri Lanka and Estonia convened their inaugural bilateral political consultations at the senior official level on April 4, 2024, in Colombo.
The consultations centered on consolidating bilateral relations and exploring new areas for cooperation between the two countries.
A focal point of discussion was the potential for collaborations in the ICT and e-governance sectors, considering Estonia’s renowned expertise in these areas. Negotiations for a Memorandum of Understanding in e-governance are underway to further strengthen the partnership.
Additionally, the discussion addressed the strengthening of collaboration in green development, tourism, education, technical assistance, and capacity building.
Both sides exchanged views on cooperation at multilateral forums, developments in their respective regions, and current global issues. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to upholding the values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
The next session of bilateral consultations is scheduled to take place in Tallinn in 2026.
The consultations were co-chaired by Shobini Gunasekera, Director General for Europe and North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, and Kristi Karelsohn, Director General of the Department for Asia, Pacific, Africa, and Middle East of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia.
