Sri Lanka and France Sign Bilateral Agreement on Debt Restructuring

The Ministry of Finance has announced the successful signing of a bilateral agreement between Sri Lanka and France, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s ongoing external debt restructuring process.

The official signing ceremony took place yesterday (June 16) in Colombo. The agreement was signed by Mahinda Siriwardana, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, on behalf of the Sri Lankan government, and William Roos, Assistant Secretary for Multilateral Affairs, Trade and Development Policies at the Directorate-General of the Treasury, representing the government of France.

According to the Finance Ministry, the signing of this agreement underscores the government’s commitment to swiftly concluding the debt restructuring process in order to restore debt sustainability and revitalize Sri Lanka’s economy.

The Ministry also noted that France has played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring efforts, co-chairing the Official Creditor Committee alongside Japan and India. The statement highlighted the leadership, dedication, and constructive engagement of the French government, which have been instrumental in supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.

Furthermore, the Ministry emphasized that the conclusion of the exchange of notes and the formal signing of the agreement will help to further strengthen the long-standing and deep bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and France.
