The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has made the decision to appoint Minister of Ports, Aviation, and Shipping, Nimal Siripala de Silva, as the party’s Acting Chairman. This resolution was reached during the SLFP politburo meeting chaired by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, which took place this morning (08) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
The convening of the SLFP politburo aimed to deliberate on the party’s future trajectory amidst its ongoing internal crisis. All party members, except for former President Maithripala Sirisena, former General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, and MP Shan Vijayalal de Silva, were reportedly invited to the meeting.
On Thursday (04), the Colombo District Court issued an interim injunction restraining former President Maithripala Sirisena from functioning as the SLFP chairman following a complaint filed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. However, Sirisena has expressed his intention to present relevant facts to the court regarding the issue.
Meanwhile, Acting General Secretary of SLFP, Dushmantha Mithrapala, filed a complaint with the Maradana Police on Friday (05), alleging the disappearance of several ‘important’ files from the party headquarters. Consequently, access to the SLFP headquarters in Darley Road, Colombo 10, has been restricted for all individuals during the ongoing investigation into the complaint.
Earlier in March, former President Maithripala Sirisena sparked controversy by claiming awareness of the true mastermind behind the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks. He expressed readiness to disclose this information to the judiciary upon inquiry or if an order is issued on the matter. Speaking to the media in Kandy, Sirisena emphasized the importance of confidentiality regarding such disclosures, urging judges to maintain strict confidentiality.
