Sri Lanka has earned international recognition after being named among the World’s Top 50 Food Destinations for 2026 in the latest editorial rankings published by Travel And Tour World (TTW).
The annual list highlights countries that are shaping the future of global culinary tourism and was compiled based on factors such as culinary heritage, regional diversity, street food culture, fine dining, locally sourced ingredients, sustainability, beverage traditions, cultural authenticity and overall dining experiences.
Sri Lanka’s inclusion reflects the country’s rich culinary heritage, renowned for its aromatic spices, fresh seafood, tropical ingredients and distinctive regional cuisine.
According to TTW, “Sri Lanka is a vibrant culinary destination where aromatic spices, tropical ingredients and centuries of cultural influences create unforgettable dining experiences, from bustling street-food stalls to elegant coastal restaurants.”
From traditional rice and curry to hoppers, kottu, seafood delicacies and a variety of local desserts, Sri Lankan cuisine continues to attract food lovers from around the world.
TTW also highlighted 10 must-visit culinary destinations across the island:
- Colombo – Famous for rice and curry, kottu, hoppers and fresh seafood.
- Galle – Renowned for seafood, Sri Lankan curries and colonial-era dining.
- Kandy – Known for authentic local cuisine, rice and curry, and traditional sweets.
- Negombo – Popular for seafood curries, grilled fish and lagoon specialities.
- Ella – Offers organic produce, Sri Lankan cuisine and hill-country dining.
- Jaffna – Celebrated for its crab curry, dosas and bold Tamil-inspired flavours.
- Mirissa – Known for fresh seafood and beachfront dining.
- Nuwara Eliya – Famous for tea-inspired cuisine, pastries and colonial classics.
- Hikkaduwa – Offers fresh seafood, Sri Lankan curries and vibrant beachside dining.
- Trincomalee – Renowned for fresh seafood and authentic coastal cuisine.
In the 2026 rankings, Mexico was named the world’s top food destination, followed by Italy and Spain.
The Top 50 list features leading culinary destinations from Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, recognising countries that have successfully preserved their food heritage while embracing innovation and sustainable culinary practices.
Sri Lanka’s inclusion is expected to further strengthen its appeal as a tourism destination, particularly among international travellers seeking authentic food and cultural experiences.
