On Wednesday (28), the Sri Lanka Navy formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration at the Navy Headquarters.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera.
The Memorandum of Understanding focuses on fostering bilateral cooperation to detect and interdict illicit trafficking in special nuclear material and other radioactive substances. This collaboration includes technical and methodological cooperation, emphasizing the installation and enhancement of technical systems dedicated to the detection and identification of such materials at border crossing control points within the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The signing ceremony witnessed the participation of Director General Engineering Rear Admiral Ravi Ranasinghe, Director General Operations Rear Admiral Nishantha Peiris, as well as senior naval officers and officials from the U.S. Embassy in Colombo.
