Sri Lanka Navy’s 2024 Operations: Over Rs. 28 Billion in Contraband Seized, 407 Suspects Apprehended

The Sri Lanka Navy achieved remarkable success in 2024, apprehending 407 individuals—both local and foreign—linked to a variety of illegal activities, including narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, and contraband smuggling.

These operations were conducted in collaboration with regional maritime partners and law enforcement agencies, underscoring the Navy’s commitment to maintaining maritime security.

Impressive Seizures and Arrests

The gross street value of narcotics and prescription drugs seized during these operations exceeded Rs. 28,158 million. Key confiscations included:

  • Heroin: Over 622kg valued at Rs. 15,554 million.
  • Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE): More than 1,211kg worth Rs. 11,508 million.
  • Kerala Cannabis: Over 1,752kg valued at Rs. 700 million.
  • Local Cannabis: More than 119kg worth Rs. 23 million.
  • Prescription Drugs: 1,179,746 pills valued at Rs. 373 million.

In addition, Police and Police STF, acting on Navy-provided intelligence, destroyed 107,626 local cannabis plants.

The Navy also seized 21 local fishing boats and apprehended 230 suspects involved in drug trafficking, handing them over to authorities for legal action.

Other Significant Confiscations

Beyond narcotics, the Navy intercepted:

  • Illegal Liquor and Cigarettes: 226 bottles of liquor and 234,670 illegal cigarettes.
  • Wildlife Smuggling: A craft with five individuals transporting wild animals.
  • Gold and Pearls: Over 4kg of gold and 11 elephant pearls, along with 14 suspects.
  • Miscellaneous Items: 65687kg of smuggled Tendu leaves, 7272kg of dried turmeric, 368kg of ginger, agrochemicals, and cosmetics.

Efforts to combat human smuggling resulted in the interception of one Indian boat and 20 suspects.

Strategic Partnerships

The Navy closely collaborated with the Sri Lanka Police, Police Narcotics Bureau, Police STF, Excise Department, Indian Navy, and Maldivian Coast Guard, sharing intelligence to counter regional maritime threats.

Future Plans: Clean Sri Lanka Initiative

In alignment with the “Clean Sri Lanka” national initiative, the Navy has outlined strategic plans for 2025. These include intensifying operations against illegal activities, enhancing maritime stability, and supporting Sri Lanka’s national maritime aspirations.
