Sri Lanka Railways says steps have been taken to import 10,000 rail tracks to replace deteriorating sections along the Coastal Railway Line.
Officials stated that the shipment of new rail tracks is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka next month.
According to railway authorities, speed restrictions are currently in place between Panadura and Colombo Fort on the Coastal Line due to damaged and aging railway tracks, resulting in frequent train delays.
Officials noted that with the installation of the new tracks, approximately 70% of the existing speed restrictions on the Coastal Railway Line are expected to be removed by December this year.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Railways also announced that tenders for the renovation of several railway bridges along the Coastal Line are scheduled to be awarded next month.
Renovation work is expected to be carried out on railway bridges located in:
- Kompannavidiya
- Wellawatte
- Pinwatta
- Aluthgama
- Induruwa
- Gintota
- Dodanduwa
- Hikkaduwa
The upgrades are expected to improve railway safety, reduce delays, and enhance train operations along one of Sri Lanka’s busiest rail corridors.
