Sri Lanka has been ranked the most traffic-congested country in Asia, according to the Numbeo Traffic Index by Country 2026 Mid-Year.

The latest index places Sri Lanka at the top of the regional rankings with a congestion score of 254.5, followed by Bangladesh (246.2), Iran (215.3), India (205.1) and Indonesia (191.1).

The report highlights that Indonesia, the largest and most populous country in Southeast Asia, ranks fifth in Asia, underscoring the growing traffic congestion challenges across the region.

The remaining countries in Asia’s top 10 most congested list are Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, the Philippines and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam recorded comparatively lower levels of traffic congestion.

Globally, Sri Lanka ranks as the third most traffic-congested country in the world, with an index score of 320.3, behind Nigeria in first place and Costa Rica in second.

Bangladesh and Kenya complete the global top five.

The Numbeo Traffic Index measures road congestion using several factors, including travel time, delays caused by traffic, fuel inefficiency and carbon dioxide emissions generated by road traffic.
