Sri Lanka has been named the World’s No. 1 Island Destination for 2026, topping the list of the “50 Best Islands in the World” compiled by international travel publication Big 7 Travel.
The prestigious ranking recognises Sri Lanka’s exceptional diversity, highlighting its golden beaches, scenic coastline, lush tea plantations, ancient temples, colonial-era towns, mist-covered mountains and world-renowned wildlife.
According to Big 7 Travel, Sri Lanka offers far more than a traditional beach holiday, with its rich cultural heritage, historic landmarks and unique travel experiences making it a standout destination.
The publication also praised attractions such as Yala National Park, renowned for having one of the world’s highest densities of leopards, as well as its thriving elephant population.
It further recalled the famous words of explorer Marco Polo, who described Sri Lanka as “the finest island of its size in all the world.”
Sri Lanka secured the top position ahead of several internationally acclaimed island destinations, including Moʻorea in French Polynesia, Socotra in Yemen, Madeira in Portugal and Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands.
The recognition marks another major achievement for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and further strengthens the country’s reputation as one of the world’s leading travel destinations in 2026.
