The total number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has climbed to 76,044, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).
The NDCU said 2,652 new infections were reported yesterday (19) alone, while 162 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across the country continue to be classified as high-risk dengue areas.
Health officials noted a sharp rise in dengue cases over recent months, with 8,590 infections reported in May, 21,537 in June, and 20,666 cases recorded during the first 19 days of July.
A total of 53 dengue-related deaths have been reported this year, with the case fatality rate currently standing at 0.07%.
The Western Province remains the worst-affected region, accounting for 40,009 cases, or 52.61% of the national total. It is followed by the Southern Province with 11,707 cases and the Central Province with 6,431 cases.
Among districts, Gampaha has recorded the highest number of infections with 15,910 cases, followed by Colombo with 15,110 cases, including 3,073 cases reported within the Colombo Municipal Council area. Matara has reported 5,330 cases, while Kandy and Kalutara have recorded 5,111 and 5,010 cases, respectively.
Health authorities have urged the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by keeping their surroundings clean, particularly during the ongoing rainy season, and to seek immediate medical attention if they develop fever or other symptoms associated with dengue.
