Sri Lanka Releases Imported Salt to Local Market Amid Shortage

The Lanka Salt Company in Hambantota announced that imported salt will be available in local markets starting today (06).

Chairman D. Nandana Thilake stated that salt prices will see a slight increase due to the imports but assured that the hike will be reversed by March 2025, once imports cease.

The first shipment, comprising 1,485 metric tons of salt from India, arrived in Sri Lanka on January 27 to address a nationwide shortage. This marks the first time in 15 years that Sri Lanka has imported salt for general consumption.

Adverse weather conditions severely impacted local salt production, prompting the government to approve the import of 30,000 metric tons to stabilize supply. Salt imports from India will continue until February 28, 2025, to mitigate the shortfall.
