Sri Lanka Seeks BRICS Membership: A Strategic Move for Multilateral Cooperation

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia, Pakir Amza, has confirmed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s formal expression of interest in joining the intergovernmental organization BRICS. The announcement came via a letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring Sri Lanka’s aspiration to become part of the influential coalition.

Speaking to Russian media outlet RIA Novosti, Ambassador Amza revealed that Sri Lanka had also approached other BRICS member nations, seeking their endorsement to join the group as a partner country. “We are awaiting a positive response,” he added.

In October, President Dissanayake reached out to Putin through formal communication, aligning with the Foreign Ministry’s announcement of Sri Lanka’s decision to apply for membership in both BRICS and the New Development Bank. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath highlighted that Colombo views BRICS as a platform for fostering mutually beneficial cooperation, promoting peace, and supporting development by reinforcing comprehensive multilateralism aligned with the UN Charter.

Additionally, in December last year, President Dissanayake sought the support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to back Sri Lanka’s BRICS application.

BRICS, which currently comprises ten member countries, represents a population of 3.6 billion and accounts for over 40% of global oil production and approximately 25% of worldwide goods exports. Sri Lanka’s inclusion in the group could mark a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance international partnerships and strengthen its economic and geopolitical standing.
