Sri Lanka Temporarily Lifts Import Controls on Rice Amid Shortages

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to permit the import of rice without the need for import control permits until December 20, 2024.

Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced that the decision was made to address current rice shortages in the domestic market, including Nadu and other varieties. The shortages are attributed to recent adverse weather conditions that caused significant damage to paddy cultivation.

Effective immediately, rice can be imported into the country without obtaining import control permits, easing restrictions to stabilize the market and ensure an adequate supply.
