The Ministry of Lands and Irrigation has announced plans to digitize operations related to agriculture, irrigation, and land management in Sri Lanka, as part of a broader effort to modernize key sectors of the economy.
According to Deputy Minister Susil Ranasinghe, a preliminary discussion on the digitization initiative was held yesterday, laying the foundation for a centralized system to improve efficiency and coordination.
Under the proposed plan, data and information from agriculture, irrigation, and land sectors will be integrated into a unified digital platform, allowing for streamlined planning, real-time monitoring, and more effective project implementation across the country.
Deputy Minister Ranasinghe noted that the government intends to launch several major projects by the end of next year under this initiative. These include:
-
10 new irrigation projects
-
An insurance scheme for farmers
-
Allocation of 500 land plots for agricultural and development purposes
In total, 25 new development projects are expected to be introduced under the digitization and modernization drive.
The Ministry believes that the integration of digital technology will help enhance transparency, accelerate service delivery, and support long-term sustainable development in the sectors involved.
