Sri Lanka to Launch Digital National Identity Cards This Month

Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, announced today (14) that Sri Lanka will begin issuing digital national identity cards this month.

Addressing a media briefing, the Deputy Minister stated that all new National Identity Cards (NICs) would transition to a digital format. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the delays currently associated with obtaining identity cards.

Weeraratne revealed that the project will cost an estimated Rs. 20 billion. To alleviate the financial burden, half of the expenses will be covered through assistance from India.

The move marks a significant step in modernizing Sri Lanka’s identity management system and improving public services.
