Sri Lankan Among Evacuees Flown to New Delhi from Iran Under India’s ‘Operation Sindhu’

A Sri Lankan national was among 291 individuals who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday evening (23) on a special evacuation flight from Iran, operated by the Government of India under ‘Operation Sindhu’, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The group included 290 Indian nationals and one Sri Lankan, all of whom were evacuated from Mashhad, Iran, amid rising tensions in the region.

With this latest operation, the number of Indian nationals safely repatriated from Iran has now reached 2,003, the MEA confirmed.

In a related development, the first batch of 161 evacuees from Israel is expected to arrive in New Delhi today. These individuals were transported from Israel to Amman, Jordan by road before being flown to India.

In response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the Indian government has intensified evacuation efforts for its citizens wishing to return home. The process involves land travel to neighboring countries followed by repatriation flights.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan nationals currently in Iran or Israel who wish to return have been urged to contact the respective Sri Lankan missions in order to register their interest for evacuation.
