Ranil Jayawardena, former Member of Parliament for North East Hampshire and Deputy Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC), has been awarded a knighthood in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List for his significant contributions to public service.
Born in London to Sri Lankan parents and raised in the Basingstoke borough, the 38-year-old attended local schools before graduating in Government from the London School of Economics in 2008. His political career began close to home, serving as a councillor for BDBC from 2008 to 2015, rising to deputy leader.
Political Milestones
First elected as an MP in 2015, Sir Ranil represented North East Hampshire until 2024, when he narrowly lost his seat. During his tenure:
- As International Trade Minister (2020-2022): He safeguarded global supply chains during the pandemic and negotiated trade agreements to enhance the UK’s economic position.
- As Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2022): Appointed by then-Prime Minister Liz Truss, he spearheaded efforts to combat water pollution and improve environmental protections.

Sir Ranil emphasized his lifelong commitment to public service, stating, “Public service has always been important to me and my family, it is important in my faith, and it is an opportunity to give back to community and country.”
