The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that the process of amending laws to cancel nominations from the previous local government election is underway.
Minister Prof. Chandana Abeyratne confirmed that the Legal Draftsman’s Department is spearheading the amendments following a Cabinet decision to annul the previous nominations, a move agreed upon by the ministers.
The Provincial Council Election Act will be revised as part of this initiative. The proposed amendments are expected to be submitted to the Attorney General’s Department and subsequently presented to Parliament in the coming weeks.
Minister Abeyratne highlighted that one of the primary goals of canceling the earlier nominations is to provide opportunities for approximately one million new candidates to participate in the electoral process.
