Sri Lankans Will Soon Be Able to Import Vehicles of Their Choice – Minister

August 19, 2026

Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath says Sri Lankans will soon be able to own and use vehicles of their choice as the Government continues to ease restrictions on vehicle imports.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Motor Rally 2026 vehicle exhibition parade organised by the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers Association, the Minister said the Government is committed to creating conditions where people can travel conveniently and meet their daily needs using their own vehicles.

Herath recalled that vehicle imports had been completely suspended two years ago, leaving no possibility of importing vehicles into the country.

He said the Government subsequently managed to resume vehicle imports within a relatively short period, and that people can now import different types of vehicles under the current system.

The Minister acknowledged that some temporary restrictions have been introduced due to the situation in the Middle East, but said these restrictions would eventually be lifted.

He attributed the resumption of vehicle imports, even under a limited system, to the strengthening of the country’s economy.

“With your support, we will strengthen the economy and move it forward. Accordingly, in the near future, the people will be able to use a vehicle of their choice,” he said.

Herath further said extensive reforms are needed to provide people with greater opportunities to live comfortably and travel freely, adding that the Government is committed to implementing those changes.
