Sri Lanka’s inflation rate rises to -0.7% in May amid surge in food prices

Sri Lanka’s overall inflation, measured on a year-on-year basis by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI), increased to -0.7% in May 2025, up from -2.0% in April 2025, according to the latest data released by the Department of Census and Statistics.

The rise in inflation is largely attributed to a sharp increase in food prices. The year-on-year inflation of the food group rose significantly to 5.2% in May, compared to 1.3% in April.

Despite the headline inflation rate remaining in negative territory, the upward trend reflects mounting cost pressures in essential food items, raising concerns over the impact on household spending.
