SriLankan Airlines Pays $900,000 Monthly for Unused Aircraft, Says Deputy Finance Minister

Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, revealed in Parliament today (25) that SriLankan Airlines has been paying USD 900,000 per month in installments for three aircraft that have remained unused for several years.

Addressing Parliament, he stated that the national carrier currently operates a fleet of 22 aircraft and employs 3,194 staff members in its main airline operations, along with 2,862 employees in its strategic business units.

Dr. Suriyapperuma also announced the introduction of a five-year restructuring plan starting in 2025 to strengthen the airline. The Ministry is currently reviewing the plan, with the goal of achieving operational profitability and securing government support within this period.
