The Supreme Court has issued a notice to former President Maithripala Sirisena, requiring him to appear before the court on April 29 to explain his failure to comply with a court order to pay Rs. 1 million in compensation.
This directive follows the court’s decision to nullify the presidential pardon granted to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, who was sentenced to death in the Royal Park murder case.
Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that Sirisena had violated fundamental human rights and ordered him to pay the compensation within a month. However, during today’s hearing (March 11), President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena, representing the petitioner, informed the court that Sirisena had yet to make the payment.
In response, the court has instructed the former president to appear and show cause for his non-compliance.
