Survey Reveals 25–30% of Transgender Sex Workers Addicted to Drugs

November 20, 2025

A recent survey has found that between 25% and 30% of transgender sex workers in the country are addicted to drugs. The findings were released by an organization representing transgender sex workers, which conducted the study.

According to the organization, the country has a significant transgender population, and many individuals have turned to sex work as their primary occupation. This choice is often driven by the fact that transgender persons are sidelined by their families and excluded from their homes due to their gender identity.

The organization further noted that the perceived independence within the sex industry has contributed to increased drug addiction among the community, with many becoming dependent on substances such as crystal methamphetamine (ice), heroin, cannabis, and other narcotics.

Additionally, the survey revealed that transgender individuals are sometimes subjected to physical abuse, fabricated drug-related charges, illegal detention, and social harassment following police arrests. These incidents have been formally reported to Police Headquarters.

The organization also highlighted challenges faced during medical emergencies, as many transgender persons experience difficulties in hospitals due to a lack of awareness regarding their gender identity. In such situations, they often require assistance from lawyers and the police, as documented in a letter sent to the Inspector General of Police.

The organization expressed hope that the upcoming full survey report will help inform government institutions, including Police Headquarters, about these issues and pave the way for meaningful solutions.
