Sustainable Energy Authority Warns Against Sale of Substandard LED Bulbs

July 11, 2026

The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) has reiterated that the import, storage and sale of substandard LED bulbs with a capacity of 60 watts or less are strictly prohibited.

The Authority said strict legal action is being taken against individuals and businesses found selling LED bulbs that fail to comply with the required standards.

Under existing regulations, every LED bulb sold in the local market must clearly display the “Minimum Energy Performance Label” on its packaging, wrapper or box.

The SLSEA said it has received numerous complaints regarding the sale of substandard LED bulbs in various parts of the country.

In response, special inspection and enforcement operations have been launched to identify shops and warehouses selling such products and to take legal action against those responsible.

The Authority noted that these measures are being implemented under the powers granted by Extraordinary Gazette No. 2177/3, dated May 28, 2020.

The Sustainable Energy Authority also urged consumers to avoid purchasing LED bulbs that do not carry the mandatory energy performance label.

According to the Authority, the use of substandard LED bulbs not only results in financial losses for consumers but also leads to unnecessary electricity consumption.
