Syrian Rebels Claim Control of Damascus; President Assad Reportedly Flees

Syria’s armed opposition has announced the capture of the capital, Damascus, with reports suggesting that President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country, Al Jazeera reported.

This development follows a rapid rebel offensive that seized the city of Homs just hours earlier. According to two senior Syrian army officers speaking to Reuters and Rami Abdurrahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in a statement to AP, President Assad has reportedly left Damascus aboard a plane heading to an undisclosed location.

Flight tracking data from the Flightradar website confirmed that a Syrian Air plane departed Damascus airport around the time the capital fell into rebel hands.

The situation marks a significant shift in the long-standing conflict, with further updates expected as events unfold.
