Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, has called on the government to disclose the details of its recent discussions in the United States regarding high taxes imposed during the Trump administration.
Speaking at a press conference, Karunanayake said that while the government claims the talks were successful, it has a responsibility to inform the public about what was actually discussed and agreed upon.
He noted that if the discussions were indeed fruitful, he would welcome the outcome. However, based on the information currently available to him, no concrete or practical agreements have been reached so far.
Karunanayake emphasized that this is not a matter that affects just a few individuals over a short period, but one with long-term implications for the country’s economy. Therefore, it should not be treated lightly.
He also stressed the importance of protecting Sri Lankan exports to the United States and urged the government to engage in direct negotiations and attract American investors to strengthen the country’s export sector.
The MP concluded by saying that a well-planned, innovative strategy is needed to achieve these goals.
