Thailand has surpassed the UAE to become the most booked international destination for Indian tourists, according to year-end booking data released by MakeMyTrip, an Indian online travel platform offering flight tickets, hotel bookings, and holiday packages.
The data, reflecting bookings for the year-end holiday season, shows the UAE in second place and Sri Lanka in third among the top five overseas destinations. Vietnam and Malaysia also feature in the top five.
Tourism analysts attribute Thailand’s top ranking to strong air connectivity, visa-friendly policies, competitive pricing, and a wide range of leisure offerings. The UAE remains popular for its short travel times, shopping options, and family-friendly attractions.
Sri Lanka’s third-place ranking is credited to improved connectivity, simplified visa access, and growing interest from Indian tourists seeking short-haul destinations. Vietnam and Malaysia also saw strong demand due to affordable pricing and expanding tourism infrastructure.
The data indicates a clear preference among Indian tourists for short-haul destinations in Asia and the Middle East during peak travel seasons, with convenience and value for money emerging as key factors, according to MakeMyTrip.
