Former Deputy Minister and United National Party (UNP) MP Ravi Karunanayake has emphasized the need to focus on strengthening existing industries—particularly tourism—rather than simply relying on their current momentum.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake noted that the tourism industry has now emerged as one of the primary drivers of Sri Lanka’s economy. However, he warned that the country should not become complacent just because foreign visitors are arriving.
“Merely depending on the arrival of tourists is not a sustainable strategy,” he said. “We must actively improve and develop the tourism sector to maximize its economic impact.”
The MP stressed the importance of strategic investment and policy attention to uplift the industry further, suggesting that if properly managed, tourism could deliver significant and lasting benefits to the national economy.
