The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) has announced plans to establish three new rehabilitation centers to address the growing number of drug addicts in the country.
Director General Sujith Kothalawala stated that the new centers will be set up in Matara, Kurunegala, and Batticaloa, targeting areas significantly affected by drug abuse.
He noted with concern that the number of individuals addicted to the drug ‘ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) is increasing rapidly across the island.
In response, the NDDCB will also launch a nationwide survey to identify those addicted to toxic and illicit drugs, aiming to better inform rehabilitation efforts and policy interventions.
Additionally, the Director General emphasized that awareness programs have been expanded, particularly targeting youth, to prevent them from falling prey to substance abuse.
