The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in several areas of the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts today (May 2).
The Met Department further cautioned that temporary localized strong winds may occur during the thundershowers.
In light of the potential hazards, the general public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning.
The Department has advised seeking shelter, preferably indoors, and avoiding open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and bodies of water during thunderstorms.
Additionally, the public is strongly advised not to use wired telephones or electrical appliances connected to the mains during thunderstorms.
