December 20, 2025

Train services on the Badulla–Ambewela section of the Upcountry Railway Line officially resumed this morning (December 20), following extensive repairs carried out after damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

To mark the reopening of the line, a special Udarata Menike train, operated using a Class S14 power set, departed from Badulla at 8.00 a.m. and travelled to Ambewela.

This marks the first train operation on the route in 23 days, since services were suspended due to the cyclone.

According to the Railway Department, multiple train services will operate daily between Badulla and Ambewela from today.

The inaugural journey was attended by Minister Samantha Vidyaratne, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, and several other officials.
