Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Prof. Kapila Perera, has reportedly tendered his resignation, according to informed sources.
His resignation comes amid recent developments surrounding a Supreme Court ruling which found that the fundamental rights of a senior official attached to the Ministry had been violated by him.
Sources indicate that Prof. Perera has already informed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of his decision and has officially notified the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government regarding his resignation from the position.
Prof. Kapila Perera, who entered public service from academia, is reported to have decided to step down following the completion of his tenure in the public sector.
According to sources, after resigning from his position as Ministry Secretary, he is expected to return to university service.
Prof. Perera previously served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa before joining the public service.
