Travelers are advised to consider getting vaccinated against mpox if they plan to visit affected areas in Africa.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has updated its recommendations in response to outbreaks of a new strain of the virus.
While other continents, including Europe, may see some cases, the ECDC stated that the risk of widespread transmission remains low, despite the World Health Organization recently declaring the mpox situation a global emergency.
The disease—formerly known as monkeypox—can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person.
Individuals who have previously been vaccinated against mpox may only require a single booster dose instead of two shots.
