US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has “virtually given up” plans to develop nuclear weapons, describing the issue as one of the key objectives of his administration’s policy towards Tehran.
Speaking to reporters as he left the White House to attend a rally in Ohio, Trump also said oil prices were declining after remaining elevated following Israeli and US strikes against Iran on February 28.
“Oil is coming down. Oil is right now lower, and it’s been lower than it was under the Biden administration,” Trump said.
He added that Iran had “virtually given up any plans of a nuclear weapon.”
Iran has consistently denied allegations by the United States and Israel that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated this position during his visit to New York last month for the United Nations General Assembly.
Pezeshkian said Iran does not seek nuclear weapons because of a religious prohibition and offered to dilute its enriched uranium stockpiles under international verification.
However, Iran has maintained that it will not compromise on its peaceful civilian nuclear programme or make structural concessions unless the United States lifts its economic sanctions.
