U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he plans to visit India in the future, following a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trump said he intended to visit India “sometime in the future” and expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations aimed at finalizing a trade agreement between the two countries.
The meeting, held during the G7 Summit in Evian, is being viewed as a positive step in strengthening ties between Washington and New Delhi following a period of diplomatic and trade-related tensions.
According to reports, Prime Minister Modi and President Trump discussed a range of issues, including bilateral trade, regional security, and the safety of Indian sailors operating in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing instability in the Middle East.
The discussions came against the backdrop of concerns raised by India following the deaths of three Indian sailors in a recent U.S. military operation targeting a tanker allegedly linked to sanctions violations involving Iranian ports.
Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of seafarers and maintaining stability in key international shipping routes.
The two leaders reviewed progress in trade negotiations, which have faced challenges in recent years due to tariff disputes and other trade-related concerns. Trump described Modi as a “tough negotiator” and expressed confidence about future economic cooperation.
India has been seeking closer economic engagement with the United States and has been encouraging a presidential visit as part of broader efforts to strengthen strategic ties.
Addressing defence cooperation, Trump reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-India partnership and emphasized Washington’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with New Delhi.
The meeting follows several months of diplomatic engagement between the two countries and comes as officials continue negotiations aimed at concluding a comprehensive trade agreement.
Following the summit, officials from both nations are expected to continue discussions on trade, investment, defence cooperation, technology, and regional security issues.
The interaction between Modi and Trump at the G7 Summit is being seen as a sign of renewed momentum in U.S.-India relations at a time of significant geopolitical and economic challenges globally.
